Beef Paprika

by BrodieThis is an old Hungarian recipe passed down from my great-grandmother. It's a great cold-weather dish.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 1 T. brown sugar
- 2 lbs beef chuck or round, cut into 1” cubes
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 cup onion sliced
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1 small clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp dry mustard
- 3/4 cup catsup
- A dash cayenne red pepper
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 1/2 cups water
After cooking
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1/4 cup water
Directions
- Melt shortening in large skillet.
- Add meat, onion & garlic; cook and stir until meat is brown and onion is tender.
- Stir in catsup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, paprika, mustard, cayenne and 1 1/2 cups water.
- Cover and simmer for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
- After simmering, blend flour & 1/4 cup water; stir gradually into meat mixture.
- Heat to boiling, stirring constantly.
- Boil and stir 1 minute.
Serve over egg noodles.
